When most people hear the word chastity, they either picture pious saints or shiny, intricate metal devices from risqué corners of the internet. The truth is, chastity has a surprisingly tangled past — one that blends religion, romance, folklore, and more than a little myth-making.
Ancient Roots
The idea of sexual restraint is as old as civilisation itself. In many early cultures, chastity wasn’t only a moral stance — it was tied to concepts of purity, honour, and even spiritual power. Ancient Greek priestesses, Roman Vestal Virgins, and certain Hindu yogis all practiced forms of celibacy, believing that sexual abstinence preserved sacred energy.
Medieval Myths and Metal Belts
The chastity belt — that infamous device of iron and locks — has captured the public imagination for centuries. Popular legend paints a picture of knights locking up their wives before riding off to the Crusades, keys safely on a chain around their neck.
The reality? Historians believe most of these tales were inventions of the 15th and 16th centuries, exaggerated further in the Victorian era. Surviving “chastity belts” in museums are often later reproductions or even satirical props. Actual belts, when they did exist, were more likely used as temporary anti-masturbation devices in the 18th–19th centuries, not lifelong marital padlocks.
The Religious Thread
Christianity, particularly during the medieval and early modern periods, wove chastity into its spiritual ideal — not just for priests and nuns, but also as a virtue for all believers. Monastic vows of celibacy aimed to channel desire into devotion. In some traditions, chastity became a symbol of moral superiority and divine favour.
Chastity and Courtship
By the Renaissance and into the 18th century, chastity took on a romantic and social function. For women especially, virginity was often considered a form of currency in marriage negotiations, tied to family honour. The “virtue” was both celebrated in poetry and policed in law.
From Control to Kink
The modern twist on chastity owes more to fetish culture than feudal castles. In the late 20th century, manufacturers began creating secure, comfortable(ish) chastity devices for erotic play. These ranged from ornate metal cages to discreet polycarbonate designs.

The Pit is a BDSM play event exclusively for men
Founded in 2024, Tom Baker had a vision, he imagined
an all-male BDSM play event where there were no restrictions! He wanted an event where people could
walk around completely naked if they wanted or dress in their finest fetish gear. In his imagination, he was
walking around the dungeon and could we see a large group of men immersing themselves into scenes and
surrounded by the sounds of laughter, the smell of leather, cries of pain, the cracking of whips and moans

This September, Celestial Studios hosts The Pit, a men-only night where curiosity, desire, and risk meet. It’s a space designed for exploration, connection, and testing limits. We sat down with founder Tom Baker to hear what makes this event different, and what attendees can expect when the lights go down.
1. The Pit has quickly become a standout event in our calendar. How would you describe its vibe and energy to someone new?
Inviting, enjoyable, and explorative. I say ‘explorative’ because there is a blend of seasoned players and beginners, where the more experienced ones naturally seize the chance to offer fun and exciting experiences to those eager to explore. The activities mainly revolve around bondage and suspension, but there are plenty of opportunities for various scenes. When people visit The Pit, they’re here to play, and they play all night!
It’s also worth pointing out that while The Pit might appear to be a gay event, this isn’t the case. It’s just a men only event.
2. What inspired you to create a men-only space for BDSM play, and how has the response been from the community?
For years, I’ve dreamed of organising an event like this, and my imagination took off when I first set foot in Celestial Studios. While there are several men-only events across the UK, none boast a venue as unique as Celestial Studios. I believe CS serves as the unique selling point for The Pit. It’s an incredible venue for hosting such an event, and when attendees first arrive, they’re like kids in a sweet shop.
The event is growing and as more people hear and learn about The Pit, I am sure it will be one of the most popular BDSM events in the UK.
3. Celestial Studios offers some of the most unique play spaces in the UK. How does The Pit help attendees make the most of what the venue has to offer?
“Play event” is central to our marketing material, it’s an invitation to explore the venue’s extraordinary spaces. Throughout these areas, you’ll find our knowledgeable crew members positioned at various equipment and themed rooms, ready to guide first-timers through safe, enjoyable experiences. My role as host involves circulating among guests, gauging interests and facilitating connections between curious attendees and the appropriate activities or equipment that might intrigue them.
4. Consent and safety are obviously paramount here. How do you help set the tone so everyone feels comfortable exploring their boundaries?
For each event, we set up a Telegram group where attendees can chat, make new friends, and even discuss scene ideas before the event. There’s also a pre-meet at a local pub starting at 3 PM in the afternoon, providing another chance to socialise before heading to the evening event.
At the entrance, guests receive colour-coded wristbands—green for those open to interaction, red for those preferring not to play with others. After changing into appropriate attire, our hosts greet each arrival personally, offering venue tours and facilitating introductions. Throughout the evening, staff members position themselves strategically across the space, remaining vigilant yet unobtrusive, ready to provide guidance or assistance whenever needed.
5. What kinds of people typically come to The Pit? Is it more experienced players, curious newcomers, or a mix?
The event is incredibly diverse, attracting individuals from across the UK and even some from Europe. They range in age from their 20s to their 70s, and embrace a wide variety of fetishes, including rubber, pups, drones, scally, military, leather, suits, medical, uniforms, and more. Experience levels cover a huge range too, there are many that play often at events and with friends and there are loads that are quite new too.
6. How do you balance creating a welcoming space while maintaining the exciting, edgy vibe The Pit is known for?
It’s an interesting question, and I believe it’s hard to quantify. In my opinion, the attendees themselves are the answer. We’re fortunate to have a thriving community of friendly, adventurous, and lively individuals. They are the ones who give The Pit its unique character; we merely provide the setting, and the community bring the fun, exciting, edgy atmosphere.
7. Are there any particular moments or stories from past events that stand out in your memory?
Despite being a relatively new event, there have already been several memorable moments. One of my favourite moments was just walking through the Suspension Suite and observing numerous people in suspension. Some were being teased with E-Stim, one was hanging upside down, and another was fully encased in rubber bondage. That was just at the entrance. As I moved further inside, I saw two guys in rope bondage, one on the floor on a sleepsack and someone else tied to a bed in another room. Near the other end, I heard screams coming from the Prison Cell. There, a man in full rubber gear secured to a bondage wheel while a group of drones tormented him. It was an amazing sight, truly a real play event.
8. The event encourages some pretty bold fetish gear. What role does dress play in shaping the night’s atmosphere?
For many people, simply putting on their gear gets them in the right mindset. However, being around others who share the same interest or learning about new gear through conversation creates a sense of excitement. When everyone is dressed in their best gear, it establishes an atmosphere where people can freely express themselves in a safe and inviting environment. Now all they want to do it play! We also have people who don’t have loads of gear and they still have fun; they might be just wearing a suit which is hot.
9. For someone who might be a little intimidated by the idea of an all-male BDSM event, what advice would you give?
I think when people imagine this sort of event, they probably think it is very sexual, and if they’re not into that with other men then they would be put off. This is wholeheartedly NOT the case. BDSM does not have to be sexual, if you enjoy a particular kink or fetish then you might be happy to explore that despite the gender of the other person. It’s important to remember when you go to these events, you don’t have to do anything, there is no pressure. But should you wish to try something there is likely someone there happy to help.
10. What’s next for The Pit? Any new ideas or expansions on the horizon?
For the next event we are introducing a ‘grope room’. Just a simple room, dark, with a St Andrew’s Cross, attendees can be restrained to the cross and hooded so they may never know how many hands were ‘groping’ them.
We are approaching our third event so the plan is to continue to grow as a community and then in the future, we might look to do ‘The Pit Weekender’. A weekend of workshops, a gear market, ted talks, equipment tutorials and 2 evening events.
The Pit is a space for men to explore, connect, and try things they might not anywhere else. It’s intense, but safe and respectful, and the night is shaped by whoever shows up. Tickets are limited, so if you’re curious, this is the place to be.
